Dye it with a semi-permanent first that is a little lighter than the actual color you want, because that will make the highlights healthier (i'm guessing they were bleached) and after a few weeks, about as long as it says the color will stay, use a good brand of permanent hair color that is the color that you want.

That about the same thing I did, and I had bleached my hair from nearly black to bleach blonde, and going small steps of color made it a lot better.

The best way is to go red first. If you go straight from blonde to brown there's a chance that it'll go a weird shade of green. Happened to one of my friends! Not good!
