You can't lighten your hair that much without bleach. Go to the professionals and don't try to do it yourself. Your hair will go ginger if you don't leave the dye on for long enough - the development of colour means your hair will be ginger before it goes blonde. Bleaching hair can be very damaging. Without bleaching it's difficult but not impossible. Hair has either warm or cool tones. Browns are warm tones so when lightening your hair will become brassy or orangey unless you are sure to use a cool toned color. So choose an Ash blonde shade. If you are just going to buy over the counter, drugstore dye, then get a shade that is 2 tones lighter than the color you actually want. Do not rely on the color chart on the box. They're never accurate.

The best thing to do is go to a salon though. Lightening is very hard on the hair even without bleach and they can make sure it's done correctly and with as little damage as possible.

Why everyone is saying bleach,bleach,bleach. Is because they are not a colorist.We have SOOOOOO many different blondes in our color lines that there is very little need to pull bleach out. What I suggest to you is look at peoples who have highlights (they are easier to spot than a good color job), and ask them where they go. It really will make your job of finding a colorist easier if you ask ask ask. Once you find a salon with a colorist on staff you go in and talk with them about the color you want to achieve. I have been a stylist for 16 years, I have been a colorist for 10. there is a difference between the two. As a stylist I knew how to color hair but nowhere near the level I have now that it became a main focus. Please don't try it at home!!! If you have a goal, leave it to some one that really knows and cares about their work. We take a lot of pride in getting your color right and making sure you get a color that IS right for you. We might cost alittle more but we earn it every time we get your smile and confidence. Call around there is someone in you town that is like me and won't short cut with bleach and toner. because you have dark brown hair if you dont want to put bleach on it to lighten it then the other blonde dyes will not lift your hair blonde only to a ginger colour which you dont want . youll have to use bleach as its the only thing that will lift your dark hair blonde. i have medium brown hair and get my hair highlighted with foils using bleach as long as you dont over do it youll be fine.

i wouldnt have a full head of bleached hair that will totally damage your hair but highlights will be fine. good luck !
